Inside Line Promotions – CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Aug. 22, 2017) – A month off from racing didn’t slow Tommy Bryant down.

Bryant drove the SawBlade.com backed Cooper Motorsports No. 28 to his second win of the season last Friday at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, and he followed with a runner-up finish on Saturday at South Texas Speedway during an ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader.

“I should have won both,” he said. “I made a mistake Saturday. I ran the bottom the first five laps and I should have moved up sooner.”

The successful weekend began on Friday at Heart O’ Texas Speedway, where Bryant was fast right out of the trailer.

“Brad (Benic) was with us all weekend and he had the car on kill,” he said. “I drew the highest pill and we came from last to first in our heat. The track was pretty good early, but took rubber later.

“In feature I found the rubber in the middle and got to third right away (after starting fifth) and then caught the leaders in traffic. Ray Allen (Kulhanek) got taken out by a lapped car so that put us in second. I noticed under caution that (leader) Caleb Martin’s right rear tire was down to the cords so I settled in and conserved my tires.”

With five laps remaining Martin’s tire exploded, propelling Bryant into the lead.

“I rolled into the throttle easy and kept the car straight,” he said. “I drove smart instead of aggressive. Good thing it wasn’t a 26-lap feature. Both rear tires looked like slicks at the end.”

Another bad pill draw put Bryant at the tail of his heat race on Saturday at South Texas Speedway. Bryant was able to drive from fifth to a third-place finish, which earned enough points to advance into the feature redraw. Unfortunately, he pulled the highest number – eight – to start the A Main on the outside of the fourth row.

“When I got off the bottom I was able to make up a straightaway in five laps,” he said. “I stalked Ray Allen, watched and learned and was just going to make my move for the lead. I don’t think he knew I was there. And then the caution came out with about three laps to go. My tire sealed up and it was pretty much over.”

Bryant maneuvered to a second-place finish, which was his fifth top five of the season.

Only a pair of ASCS Gulf South races remain this season – Sept. 2-3 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, for the 3rd annual Jim Brown Memorial.

“Cooper Motorsports is putting up $1,000 if someone can sweep the weekend,” said Bryant, who has won at the track this season. “I plan on that money going to me.”

“Joe Dooling and Brodie Hayward were with us this weekend and I want to thank them for helping out,” Bryant said. “They bought us tires and helped with some motor issues we had. They owned Bryan Clauson’s car and now own the non-wing No. 63 car Brady Bacon runs.”
